On Playing: Just Doing It

We are a pretty active family.....we play a lot together. But, I have a little secret to share....not really a secret, just a little bit of information. Greg and I are not always in the mood to play. There are many days when we would rather just sit on the couch.....or read a good book...or a bunch of other things, rather than play. It might be that we are tired....or just want to do....what we want to do. But we have 2 little active boys.....boys who like to play.....and need to play.

I have never played a sport ...or some large motor activity with the boys... and regretted it. I always walk away feeling better.....even a bit energized.  I push myself.....so does G. There are times when my mind is wandering....when I'm just going through the motions.....times when I would rather be doing something else. But then I give myself a ~mid-play-pep~talk~.......I think to myself....these days are flying by. There will come a day.....probably soon....when they won't want Greg and me to play with them.

I've shared many stories of our basement or outdoor adventures.......believe me, some days Greg and I have to really encourage each other to get up and play. But like I said....we never regret it. We are making tons of memories, but we are also helping our boys to get in shape.. or stay in shape.....to stay active. Actually, I think they are the ones helping us.

Not enough parents do this! I am guilty of it myself! They do grow up fast, so we should cherish it while we can.

My baby is 11, and he still likes to have me around, but I only give that another year. :(

That's what I love about you guys. YOu're so active with your children. I'm so guilty of watching them play, but they get soooo excited when I actually get involved.

It's true. Soon enough they'll want to be with their friends and not you. (Or at least that's the way my teen is.)

Yea, I know what you mean! I think I want a rock-wall in my house. If I had THAT as a choice, I think I'd do it OFTEN. ha ha ha

I'm glad you get in there and have fun. Keeps ya young, and they treasure every moment of it.

I'll have to remember that and do something fun with my kiddos tonight!

And by the way - no, I didn't type that blog at 4:30 a.m. I typed it the night before and set it to post the next morning at 4:30 a.m. See, my thinking is that I'm "central" time zone and people out there on the east coast may already be up and reading blogs at 5:30. So I've gotta set it to post at 4:30 so they can have it waiting for them when they sit down to drink their morning cup of coffee in Scottsville! ha ha ha

more than you wanted to know right? Right!

I hope I can be as active and involved with Andrew as you are. Some of my fondest memories growing up were those spent with my parents playing.

Such a good reminder, I know I needed to read this. I don't always want to play just for plays sake. The kids love it though when we join in!

This has encourage me. A lot of times in this time of year it is freezing. I really want to read, blog, and relax. Of course, we homeschool and do things. But I forget they need play from me too.

I love it Mimi! You are an awesome mom! I have two very active boys and have gotten in a bad habit of not playing outside with them as much as I used to. They've gotten so easy with playing on their own, but it's true...it's GREAT memories for mom to be out there playing with them too!

thanks for that! it is so hard to not be selfish when i spend all day at home with them and all i want to do is what i want to do! how do you talk yourself into it? i have gotten so good at talking myself out of it that it is gonna be hard to get into the habit of talking myself into it but it is sooo important!! thanks for the reminder!!
