Our Own Musical Variety Show

A new upstairs neighbor moved in this week. There are actually 2 apartments above us.....each contain 2 floors within their apartments. One apartment is over our bedrooms.....the other apartment is over our living space. Below the boys bedroom is our neighbor's garage.....up and down the garage goes....at all hours of the night. It makes me crazy. It also sort of makes me uncomfortable having a garage....with a car....right below my boys bedroom. That's just me....just one of my pet peeves.

We've experienced all sorts of different noises.....kids running....what sounded like someone bowling......someone walking on their treadmill. Yep, this is all very new to us. Remember, we moved from the country.....barely a neighbor around. We could be as loud as we wanted....and never worried about someone elses "life" noises being too loud for us.

About the musice.....it seems the neighbors over our bedrooms favor fast paced latin music. Our new neighbor.....wow......he is a big fan of the 70's. As we were eating our lunch.....I suddenly started singing "Bye,Bye, Miss American Pie....drove my chevy to the levy, but the levy was dry...." and then I stopped. The boys looked at me a bit strange and wondered what was this pie I spoke of..... and a chevy? what's a levy? I explained it was a song I used to know...back in the day. On and on it went through the day.....70's song after 70's song....and nowI can't get the melodies out of my head.

I'm counting down the days until we move(within our complex). Though, I'm going to embrace this interesting setting.....this new experience. Sam wondered if it would be rude to hit the ceiling with a broom and exclaim "hey, we are trying to sleep down here".....I suggested that it wouldn't be very neighborly to do so....but then I wondered....where did Sam even get that idea?

And so the weekend begins.....

This past summer while we were at the beach condo, we experienced the same thing. When we bought the condo, the people above us were older professionals. The only noise they made was running the washing machine early in the morning. They have since sold it and the new owners rent it out. On this particular day, it sounded just like you have described. It sounded like people were taking boxes packed full and just dropping them on the floor over and over, bowling, kids running back and forth, screaming, slamming cabinets. Within the first 30 minutes, I was ready to pack up and head home a day early. I thought we might be calling the police later that night but surprisingly they quietened down. If the ceilings weren't so high, I might have used the broom too...neighborly or not :-) They weren't being very respectful neighbors.

Ah yes, I had forgotten the joys of living so close to neighbors. I lived in several apartments..."back in the day" ;) I remember in particular the smells of ethnic foods permeating at all hours.

Hope the move goes well!

We have a teenage boy and girl who live upstairs with their single mother. Mom works two jobs. She leaves the house at 11:30pm and the party starts at 11:45. Their back steps go right past our bedroom window. One night I lifted the blinds to scream at them that I was trying to sleep. My head was literally 6 inches from theirs and they were screaming at the other kids who were inside their apartment. We also have to listen to them getting sick off the balcony when they've had to much to drink. I told the mother that if it happened again I would call the police. So a couple of nights later another neighbor did call the police. They thought it was me. So now they don't speak to me. Oh well.

When we lived in shared dwelling (it wasn't a regular apt.), we had a downstairs neighbour who was extremely selective about the sounds she tolerated.

She took great exception to my using our washer - and said so - but bounded up the stairs and THROUGH THE DOOR uninvited, unannounced, starry-eyed and ready to chat, at the sound of our stand mixer. She would pretty much set up camp until whatever I happened to be baking came out of the oven! LOL!

I have a confession... My kids are completely to blame for the broom to the ceiling idea.....

About 2 months ago, a fraternity moved in above us into apartment 511. We have done everything. Ask them to be quiet, complain to the super, call the police...like 50 times. Finally, I decided I'd had enough and I gave each kid a broom, mop handle and some shoes. they were told to jump on the bed AT 6AM and bang on the ceiling with the mop and broom stick ends and throw shoes at the ceiling as hard as they could. And YELL... loudly....

It worked ;-)
